A Defense for Studying Theology and Gaining...
Opposer: Why study things that don't matter? Calvinism, Arminianism, pre-trib, post-trib, complementarianism, egalitarianism... who cares! I love Jesus. That should be enough.
Defender: Ok then, tell me, do you strive to be more like God?
Opposer: Of course I do.
Defender: Even though we could never be perfect, do you think we should strive for perfection?
Opposer: Yes. We're called to be like Christ, even though we can never be exactly like Him. In which case, we'd actually be Him.
Defender: Would you agree that God is omniscient?
Opposer: Definitely. He knows all things!
Defender: And you'd agree that you're not omniscient, correct?
Opposer: If I were omniscient, then I'd be God! So I'm definitely not.
Defender: So, God knows all things. We know some things. Right?
Opposer: Right.
Defender: So, just as we can't be perfect but strive for perfection, since we know some things and God knows all things, even though we could never know all things, shouldn't we strive to learn more things?
Opposer: You see that's where I disagree. I don't think we have to learn things to be more like God.
Defender: But God knows all things. Learning more things would move us closer to knowing all things. The closer to we are knowing all things, the more like God we'll be.
Opposer: That's a really good point.
Defender: I want to take every chance to become more like God that I can. If that's through theology, knowledge, or what have you, then I'm going to pursue that.
Opposer: Excuse me. I'm going to go pick up a few theology books.
