Apostasy
Every second our body, our flesh sprints onward towards death. Every moment we are flung towards an untimely exit and a strange entrance into the undiscovered country. To escape the fear of certainty, we seek hope, and as Christians we have found it. Rather it has found us, God has drawn us, and called us into a life of obedience. So why as Christians do we still search for death? Did we not have enough of it before Christ found us? How do we, who know life, which is reality, desire death and a grand lie? The creation-old lie that tells of an ability to attain what man desires most: To be the autonomous master of his domain. Did they not have it in the beginning when they were set above all else on earth? No! Earth was not enough; for once they looked up they saw the sky, the stars, the universe, and eventually its creator, God. They wanted His power, and so do we. It is striven for on every occasion when we are not subjecting ourselves to God’s authority. Oh what a rogue and peasant slave am I, for I do the same exact thing. No jury, nor prosecution for I plead guilty, and have been guilty since my entrance. Oh Apostasy! Oh Apostasy that drags us deep into the mire, filling our lungs with filth. I would say our hearts, but they have long since been in there. We are choked, and then we try to sputter, but it’s too thick. Oh Lord! Turn to us; hear our cry as your church! Pick us up, and set us upon the rock of our salvation, Jesus Christ. We want a new hymn, a new song of Praise! We want to proclaim it to the world, apologizing to it for losing our flavor, for failing them! Vanquish our pride, our Apostasy. Oh Lord, you are the only one who can. Deliver us.
